Ethical trading and our carbon emission offsetting
In 2019, as part of our commitment to reduce our packaging, we reduced the size of our kraft cardboard tubes which contain our colognes. Unfortunately the only UK supplier then decided to stop producing these tubes, and with no equivalent size being made in the EU, we turned to China.
We are assured by our Chinese manufacturer that the trees are from a sustainable source and we have done our own research which confirms this. However, we still had a concern about the amount of carbon used in air freight to get these tubes to us. So we set about looking to see how we could offset this.
We contacted a company called Just One Tree, which is a not-for-profit company that works with businesses, schools and individuals to plant trees in an effort to combat global warming. They fund reforestation organisations around the globe, focussing on projects in poverty stricken areas.
Through training, education and employment they work with villages that are committed to restoring their forests, so not only do they plant trees, but they also educate and enable local people to earn a decent living. These villages are set up in Madagascar, Kenya, Haiti, Mozambique and Indonesia and they grow Mangroves because they process carbon at a much quicker rate than tropical forests.
Our one way freight trip from China to London will use 1400kg of carbon. Each tree will remove 308kg of carbon during it's 25 year lifespan, which equates to 12.3kg per tree, per year. We decided we wanted to plant trees enough to offset the flight carbon within one year, so we have arranged to plant 114 trees which will not only offset the entire flight footprint, but also it will offset an estimated extra 33 tonnes of carbon over the next 25 years.
Small changes make big difference and we are committed to continue to change for the greater good.
